T.C. Douglas Building.
Artist: John Nugent (Canadian , born Montreal 1921)
is a nationally recognized sculptor living in Lumsden, Saskatchewan. Initially working in silver
and bronze, he gradually shifted to welded steel abstraction after meeting the American sculptor
David Smith in 1961.
Nugent's work exhibits an awkward grace in its constructivist collage of prefabricated steel elements.
While often incorporating identifiable elements, such as wheels, his sculpture eludes metaphorical
readings, instead creating meaning through the unexpected combinations of forms and materials.
Nugent, who taught for many years at the University of Regina, has executed public commissions
for the Banff Centre, the Canadian Grain Commission (Winnipeg), and the CBC Broadcasting Centre (Regina).
